November 10, 2013October is National Crime Prevention Month and there is no better way to prevent crime than to take an active role in your community. Countless numbers of citizens have impacted their neighborhoods by taking the time to care, to stand up, to be seen and to be heard. The community’s greatest weapon in crime prevention is communication between neighbors. Neighbors who care for one another communicate with one another.
Show yourself as friendly and you will reap the benefits of friendship. Neighbors who know their neighbors can report suspicious persons and activities to the police and to each other. The best way to become involved with your community is to start or join a citizen’s block watch group. Block watch groups are the eyes and ears of the community. They are also mouthpieces when it comes to letting their concerns be made known to the government that serves them. Members of block watch groups are as diverse as the community we live in.
Crime prevention is everybody’s business. Crime affects all of us and we can all take a part in preventing crime. No matter how large or small a part we play in crime prevention, each part is as important to the community as the individual who is willing to take an active role in the community.
